People often need some sort of structure, a support system to stay disciplined…..have faith…
Stoic philosophy describe three pillars of existence, Lagos, the structure of knowledge, Physics, structure of the physical world, and Ethics, the purpose of humans in the world.
Some find it in frameworks like the “golden circle” made popular by Simon Sinek; “Start with WHY ” and move towards “HOW” you will do “WHATever” it is that you want to do.
Some find it in religion and some even find it in other people, a mentor, a friend, parents.
In reality, people will most likely start doing things they want to do and then figure out how to do it. “WHY” and the reasons are realized somewhere in between this entire process.
When you decide your purpose as X or Y, you make it a binary situation, your success and eventually mental state is dependent on whether you achieve your purpose or not. This adds ridiculous amount of pressure, which may not really be necessary and even be counter productive.
I find “gratitude” as a sentiment, a great way to move away from such pressure.
I believe, being spontaneous is absolutely essential to be a creative person, not knowing your “WHY” is alright. But a balance and being in control of your emotions, your faith and some level of discipline is important.
In the end I think there are very few things that really matter… hold on to those, whatever they are for you.
